Pasco opened the Big-Nine league season with a solid 1-0 win over defending league champions Wenatchee in Wenatchee today. Hans Esterhuizen barged past 3 defenders at the top of the box before sliding the ball to Tyler Kelly who recorded the game winner in the 14th minute of play.

Pasco knocks off Eisenhower 2-1
Thursday, March 21st, 2002

Playing without starting goalkeeper Johnny Elfering, the Pasco Bulldogs hardly skipped a beat as they put together another solid performance in dismissing Eisenhower 2-1 at Road 48 in Pasco.

Pasco had a strong first half, recording 5 shots to Ike's 0 and notching a goal at the 14th minute when Tyler Kelly's throughball found Joey Graham bursting out of midfield and Graham calmly slid the ball past Ike keeper Robert McCurdy. In the second half Ike made a strong attempt to get back into the game, but again it was Joey Graham who put an end to Ike's resurgence with another goal in the 58th minute off a pass by Hans Esterhuizen that split the Ike defense.

Twelve minutes from the end of the game, Ike managed to squeek a goal past new keeper Gavin Lindsey when a free kick by Ike floated into the box and keeper Lindsey lost eye contact with the ball as it slid across the face of the goal. A quick Ike forward capitalized on the half-chance to reduce the score to 2-1.

Minutes later, Graham had an opportunity to make the score 3-1, but as he flicked the ball past the Ike keeper he was deliberately flattened and was unable to put the ball away. The referee's assistant immediately called for a Pasco penalty kick, but was over-ruled by the referee who must have somehow missed the foul and awarded a free-kick to Ike to compensate.

The Pasco defense led by Carlos Tamez, Ryan Orozco, Ron Mitchell, Caleb Stromstad and J.T. Maxwell was solid throughout the game and did an excellent job of denying the speedy Ike forwards. In midfield, Hans Esterhuizen, Joey Graham and Eddie Garcia completely dominated the Ike center. On the wings, the Campbell brothers put in another strong performance. Up front, the runs of Tyler Kelly, Robbie Burns and Brandon Benson caused the Ike defense many anxious moments.

"Losing Johnny in goal hurt us somewhat," said head coach Sean Esterhuizen, "however, Gavin did an excellent job at such short notice. And I was very pleased with the team's chemistry and the way we controlled possession of the ball."

Pasco plays host to Moses Lake on Saturday at 1:00pm at Rd. 48 in Pasco.

Pasco blows out Kennewick 4-0
Tuesday, March 19th, 2002

On a very blustery evening under the Lampson lights, Pasco again showed excellent form in defeating Kennewick 4-0. Strong defense and midfield play were the key as Pasco lined up 25 shots to Kennewick's lone 2 on goal.

After a scoreless first half, Pasco blew the game wide open with 3 goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half. First Tyler Kelly blasted home in the 44th minute off a Hans Esterhuizen square-ball, then Esterhuizen buried a PK in the 51st minute, followed by a rocket shot from Chris Campbell off a Gavin Lindsey pass in the 53rd minute. Carlos Tamez rounded off the scoring with a blast from a 20 yard free-kick.

Pasco plays host to Eisenhower on Thursday at 4:00pm at Rd. 48 in Pasco.

Pasco dominates Walla Walla 3-0
Tuesday, March 12th, 2002

The Pasco boys opened season play with a strong performance over Walla Walla today, winning 3-0 with goals from Chris Campbell, Joey Graham and Tom Campbell.

"This was an excellent start to the season," said Head Coach Sean Esterhuizen. "Our defense played very strongly - Walla Walla did not get off a single shot, which tells you how completely we dominated the game.

Clearly it was Pasco's ability to maintain possession for long stretches of play that contributed to the 25-0 shot difference between the two teams, with 18 of Pasco's shots coming in the second half.

Pasco opens seasons with Jamboree Wins over Richland and Sunnyside
Saturday, March 9th, 2002

Today, on a cold Saturday afternoon, Pasco came out on fire to notch two solid 1-0 wins over Sunnyside and Richland in the abbreviated 20-minute Jamboree format. Playing without 3 of last year's District Championship starters (injured Brandon Benson, Michael Gonzalez and Tristan Mitz), the bulldogs showed that they have the depth and talent to defend their District Championship for the 5th season in a row - and perhaps even contend for state honors.

In the first matchup with Sunnyside, the bulldogs dominated most of the play, with Hans Esterhuizen notching a penalty kick at the 9 minute mark after Tyler Kelly was pulled down in the box as he raced for goal. Overall, the bulldogs played with aggression and a quick passing game that opened up several scoring opportunities in the second 10-minute half, including a missed chance across the face of the goal by freshman Bryce Kelly after a brilliant cross by Joey Graham. Chris Campbell also had two excellent looks at goal, one of them a rocket shot that the keeper did well to smother.

In the second game against Richland, Pasco played with poise and confidence, allowing Richland just one shot with tight defense led by veterans Ryan Orozco and Carlos Tamez and newcomers Ron Mitchell and J.T. Maxwell. Up front, the foursome of Joey Graham, Tyler Kelly, Robbi Burns and Chris Campbell proved too hot for the Richland defense to handle. Pasco's offense created 5 excellent scoring opportunities, including a tremendous 1-2 combination by seniors Kelly and Graham to split the Richland defense and allow Graham to notch the only goal of the match.

In midfield, Richland was missing their key playmaker, Rashid Ghbein, and it showed as Pasco's Esterhuizen, Eddie Garcia, Tom Campbell and Nick Perez controlled much of the play.

In goal for the bulldogs, Johnny Elfering and Caleb Stromstad shared the goaltending duty and looked solid on the few crosses that came into the bulldogs area.

"I am extremely happy with our play," said Head Coach Sean Esterhuizen. "We have speed, size and ability. We moved the ball well, and although we still have some rust spots, I think we have laid the foundation for having a great season. No heroes - just team-work and hard-work."

"This is a team that cares for each other," said Assistant Coach Dwight Montgomery. "These boys like each other and are having fun - and it shows!"

Pasco plays host to Walla Walla this coming Tuesday at Road 48 field in Pasco. Kickoff is 3:00pm.
